The resolve of the ruling Cpdm party to carry frank messages to the populations in the five sections of Fako Division are certainly paying off. The campaign caravans have succeeded to whip up sentiments and emotions among the populations as they have recounted the goodies that the Cpdm has brought over the last mandate.

Santa : Gunning 100% for Biya
Santa : Gunning 100% for Biya

Santa has in the past years been the bedrock of the opposition but a reversion of this tendency is on the way with the population throwing their weight to the CPDM party.

he Mezam II section of the CPDM Santa is made up of 27sub sections and several branches and cells. Currently the registration exercise is going on through all the sub sections with the central committee delegates on the field working with the local party officials, the section presidents and the subsection presidents. The Santa constituency is a very strategic constituency given that Santa is virtually the center of politics in the North West region. It is equally the gateway into the region with the leader of the main opposition party, Chairman John Fru Ndi hailing from Santa. The political game is thus usually very tense here.

Santa is equally much closed to Bamenda which is the administrative headquarter of the region. As concerns the ongoing intensification on voters registers an elite and a CPDM charge de mission, Jonathan Fru says ‘We have the central committee delegates who are working together with the local party officials. They have come up with a strategy and they move from one area to another. During the last election in our constituency we registered 33.000 voters. Today from the newly registered we have 5730.000 while those who are confirming their registration are about 10,050. So the total registration is about 15.780. Our target is to go beyond the 33.000 that were registered in the previous election. That’s why efforts are being intensified in the field with the elite mobilized to help where ever need is so most of the obstacles can be overcome.’As Mr. Fru Jonathan puts it the challenges are enormous but are in no way a deterrent to them given that their objective is to ensure that the population registers very massively on the voters list. Some of the challenges they have to grapple with are material. ‘First of all the teams have to move from one subsection to another and this entails a lot of material expenditure. We have to take care of the team as they move around; feed them get sufficient transportation facilities mostly when they have to go to the villages that are not very accessible. We have problems of Identity cards. We discovered that a great number of the population don’t have identity cards. Most of the people have expired identity cards and it is incumbent on us to help them get new identity cards. We are grateful to government for extending the dateline of the issuance of the identity cards to August 31. This will go a long way to help us resolve these shortcoming before the exercise finally runs out.’ The opposition has occupied this constituency for quite some time but today the awareness seems to have grown and the people know what they want and where they can get that from. The large numbers of former SDF militants that are crossing over to the CPDM every day are proof that these population know better today. ‘For over 20 years our people have been deceived, formerly we had only the SDF occupying the parliament and council but today the councils are shared between the SDF and the CPDM and we hope that the Cpdm will in the next election take over the councils and the parliamentary seat. Situated in the grass field the area of the country, Santa makes use of tradition rulers who are custodian of the laws and traditions of the land. They thus have a big role to play as concerns such exercises given that they are closer to the population even more than the elite who are mostly based in the cities. What is the level of collaboration with the traditional leaders, we sought to Know from Jonathan Fru ‘Most of our traditional rulers are politically aware. We understand that they are supposed to be neutral given that they control a huge population that may not be for the same party all the times. So their role is to encourage the people to register but never to influence any one. During our meetings they come to be informed and we equally associate them in the registration process you know the registration is general for all the parties. It is after this registration that we shall precede to campaigns and then to voting.’ Globally the registration exercise is going on well in Santa and by the time this phase runs out the stake holders say they would have registered many if not all those who are of voting age.
